Five Reasons Your Home Can Serve as the Perfect Place to Work

Five Reasons Your Home Can Serve as the Perfect Place to Work

World Wide Web is full of success stories where someone started off from a garage (e.g. Apple) or a dorm room (e.g. Facebook) and went on to become a huge success.

There’s no doubt that Internet has proved to be a boon for entrepreneurs, before its advent, someone with a business idea has to wait for a long time before he/she was able to give it a try, but thanks to Internet, you can now try almost any idea online without having to invest a lot of money.

Then there’s a plethora of work-from-home jobs coming out in the job market, or anybody who’s an expert at a particular topic can start blogging and earn good enough income while working from home.

Doesn’t matter if you are working from home or an office, your working environment can make a huge difference?

Therefore it is imperative that anybody looking to work from home should get himself a separate room for working.

Don’t try to take up and carry out a home-based job or business from a makeshift setting from your lounge or living room because you will fail to perform at your optimal level.

You can look around and choose some unused space (e.g. the good old garage) but if that’s not available you will have to think out of the box, for example investing in a loft conversion from the pros at Tredent Roofing who specialize in the roofing, gutter, and siding work that would be involved (given that you have some adaptable roof space available).

Rest assured it will prove to be a perfect workplace for more than one reasons, let’s have a look at some of these reasons.

Set it up like a proper office

As I said, giving yourself a proper working environment is important, and it’s hard to have that environment with household surroundings and some of your family members strolling around you all the time.

It can turn disastrous for your job or business especially when you are in a video conference with some of your client or employers.

Having set up a proper office in your loft can give you the seclusion, privacy, and peace to focus on your work.

Work Life Balance

It’s true that working from home will let you give more time to your family but you will be facing a new type of work-life balance challenge.

When you are working in an office, the balance tends to tilt towards the work, as you spend 8 to 9 hours in the office and more than an hour in traveling.

You will find your job taking up the bigger part of your daytime.

In contrast, when working from home the balance will tilt towards your family life, you will find yourself doing the routine chores and getting a little too comfy to work properly.

Having a separate office in your loft will let you focus and work without an interruption.

Get the much needed Privacy

If you have got a big family, you will find it hard to have the privacy needed for any kind of job. Nobody likes when they are working on their PC and someone stand on their back and keep nagging.

Not to forget, having your PC, laptop, or documents in open is risky; especially when you have kids in your family.

Having a separate office in loft that you can lock will keep your work equipment and documents protected.

Have Visitors or Assistants

When you are running an online business, you can still be having some visitors every once in a while, for example some of your clients who are insisting on meeting-up or maybe a potential partner.

In this case, having a proper office in your loft will give a much better impression than having them sit in a drawing room and placing your laptop on dining table to have a talk.

Also, you might need to hire some assistants as the business grows.

Save yourself from the hassle of moving out

As earlier mentioned, many businesses started from a single room and went on to become a company with hundreds of employees.

You might not grow into a company as big as Facebook or Apple, but there’s always a chance that your business will expand, and you will need some assistants.

Having your loft space available for a small office will save you from the need (and hassles) of moving out and renting a commercial office.

You will be able to accommodate some staff and equipment in your loft and have ample time to plan your next move without hurrying.

And you?

Are you running a business from home?

Please share your experience in the comments below, thanks!

  1. Though there are so many benefits of working from home. I have to say that there are so many challenges. I personally doubt that everybody can do it. A very good discipline and financial backup are absolutely necessary to make the move and work from home.

    • Of course it’s not for everyone, Kaloyan.
That’s why, for example, 99% of bloggers fail to generate any decent income online and they finally quit.

As you said, hard work, discipline and strong organization are needed.

  2. Working from home has been an awesome experience. I am not doing any less work than when I was in 9-5 but the flexibility is there.

However, one of the banes of most people working from home is to see their business as completely “independent”.

This is not so, work from home success stories are shared by individuals that stick with same “professional” mind set as in a general office setting.

Hence, it is helpful to set up a pure business-like home office and do away with every form of distractions.

  3. Hi Erik,

Great post. I can thank of some many positives to working from home. Of course there are challenges as well but I think if you treat our business like a business and have a separate space and also actual work hours you will then be more committed to building our business.

On the other hand, if you are using a part of your living room as your business you probably will not get much done. The television, other family members, the phone, and so many other things will be a distraction.

I love the idea of working from home. Just the gas and commute are two big positives. Thank you for sharing.

  4. I can personally share my reasons why my home is a perfect place to work despite of the noise. LOL

I think “Set it up like a proper office” is what I need on your list. I’m not so sure when on earth is that going to happen, I have to plan first with my family of course. I need to consider their opinions to that if ever.

Among all, “Save yourself from the hassle of moving out” is what I love. i am very certain many will love this post. 🙂

  5. It has its own merits and demerits!
But i think the merits side is weighing more!
Since you are your own boss you need not worry about the late coming or the set target fulfilling things like that. Goes along with the timings you can select a convenient time of yours, and nobody to question that.
The freedom you enjoy in the work environment is one of the major merits you enjoy in work from home. Whereas it is the other way round in most cases in a 9 -5 job environment. Your freedom is curtailed in one way or the other. Yes, the greatest advantage at work from home is that there will always be a feelings of “You are the Boss” that gives a kind of boost or encouragement.
Though if start a work from home initiative starts one must have a time schedule to finish the job otherwise a take it easy attitude will ruin everything in no time and its difficult to get back to normalcy.
This post is an informative piece in itself and the points mentioned is taken care of.
Thanks for sharing this informative note.

  6. This was a great article, I do know there are many challenges working from home, you need to be very disciplined for one thing. When the phone rings you need to either let the service pick up or take the cal and if it is not business you need to get off. You can waste so much time on the phone as well as with company as well as family members getting in the way of YOU working..

Setting up an office is a great idea, it will make you feel like you really do have a business Right?

      You need a great organization!
      And self discipline.

It’s easy to lose hours of work, just browsing the web, or visiting social media profiles, without actually making any income.

  7. I believe that success comes from anywhere in this world. You can start anywhere and become successful, just like the examples given in the article above. So, why not consider starting at home?

Working at your own house is somehow a convenient way to work. As what is said above, there are at least five reasons your home could be the perfect place to work.

It includes the fact that it will allow you to have more time with your family, plus the fact that it could also save yourself from the hassle of moving out. I agree with these two motives because they are my main reasons why I’m working at home.

So then I can say that it’s a great idea to make your home a working place. 🙂

    Best,
